With so many to-do lists and note-takers on the App Store, you need to do something different to get noticed. For DOOO that means great design and endless options for taking new notes.
Our best iPhone apps page has some great to-do apps like Remember The Milk and Scatterbrain, so can DOOO make enough of a mark to jostle for a position there?
A Gorgeous Interface
Redesigned for iOS 7 and its flat design, DOOO looks stunning. It’s got simple colours, lovely transition effects and is very pleasing on the eyes. Well-designed apps on iOS have a tendency to feel seamless and fluid. DOOO lets you do what you came for without trying to grab your attention, but subtly making you feel like it’s a pleasant, visually rich experience.
There are four basic panes in DOOO, which can be accessed by swiping left and right. The first is a list of categories, each with a colourful and cool icon; this is the only part of the interface where colours are used. The rest is white, black and shades of grey. There are a few categories already listed, like Work, Household, Dooo, Ideas and more.
Tapping these categories or the ‘All & Search’ shows you the appropriate results in the other three panes: Today, Unsolved and Completed. These are pretty self-explanatory, of course, with the Unsolved pane being set by default to automatically list tasks and notes that you have not marked as completed in 24 hours of setting them or by their individual deadline.
Setting A Task Or Note
To set a new task, you have to rely on the three buttons at the bottom of the app. Tap the middle one and you will be asked to enter a new task (max 120 characters). A slider bar under it lets you set the time period/deadline of that app, after which it will be moved to the Unsolved pane. You can also mark it as important or urgent by tapping the provided exclamation mark.Some tasks aren’t meant for today, so you can set a reminder for them. Tap the alarm icon and scroll to the desired date and time. You can also make it a recurring alarm for every hour, day, week or month.
But sometimes, text is not what you want. For example, you could be driving and so be unable to type; or you might want to take a photo of an item to remind yourself about it. DOOO has you covered.
The first button lets you record voice notes, and there doesn’t seem to be a time limit on those either. I went past one minute, which should be longer than most notes require, and DOOO just kept on recording. After you are done recording, it still insists that you type a name for the note, somewhat defeating the purpose of the voice note (a transcription feature would have been nice here). If it’s only voice notes that you’re after, Bakari recommends Capito and Instarecorder.
The third button lets you add tasks by taking a photo, adding one from your gallery, scribbling a doodle or pinning a position on a map. It’s pretty darn cool, but again, you will need to name that task.
Interacting With Your DOOO List
Once your DOOO list is populated, you can still interact with each task with simple gestures. Swipe right on a task and you will get options to mark it as important, urgent or completed. Swipe left on the same task to get options to lock it, set an alarm for it or delete it.
Long-tapping a task gives you a different menu, which includes the option to edit it, manually move it, or add a note. This note lets you go beyond the 120-character limit of the name so that you can add any details you feel necessary. Finally, this menu can also be used to send your task as an email or a message.
The One Big Flaw
DOOO is almost a perfect app if you want a to-do list for your iOS device. But that’s its biggest problem — it’s an offline app that only works on one device. You can’t sync your DOOO list across iOS devices, let alone other computers or the Web. In a world where no one is using only one gizmo at a time, this is a crippling flaw for what is otherwise a fantastic to-do list app. That’s what makes me recommend a cross-platform app like Wunderlist over this one.But hey, DOOO is free so I’d recommend you still download it and try it out. It’s gorgeous and if you don’t need cloud backup or syncing, it’s as good as any to-do list app out there — perhaps even better.
